TILE FLOORING

waterproof, DURABLE, asthetic

Tile flooring comes in various materials including ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles, glass tiles, marble tiles, granite tiles, and natural stone tiles, such as limestone or quarry tile. There are grouted and grout-less options.

Tile flooring is usually less expensive than the full hardwood flooring option. But this option can get expensive as well, depending on the material you choose and the desire for any intricacy of patterns.

LVP: LUXARY VINYL PLANK FLOORING

INEXPENSIVE, FUNCTIONAL, DURABLE - waterproof (GENERALLY)

Vinyl flooring or LVP (Luxury Vinyl Planks) are often confused for laminate flooring. In fact, those terms (laminate and vinyl) are used interchangeable by many people today, since they are closely related. The main difference is that laminate is more often water resistant while vinyl flooring is known to be waterproof. But there are variations of both. So the qualities of each specific product should be reviewed.

To be clear, both laminate and vinyl are durable, affordable, great looking, and water resistant (plus). This is why many people choose these products – either laminate flooring or vinyl flooring.

So what is laminate flooring? Laminate flooring is a hybrid floor consisting of a wood composite or particleboard wood (pressed wood) topped by an image layer and wear layer, which are made from synthetic materials.

CARPETING

least EXPENSIVE, FUNCTIONAL, warm

Carpeting is obviously a tried and true form of floor covering. It’s generally the least expensive way to get your floors done. Of course, like any product, there are more expensive types of carpet. As with any flooring, the sky can be the limit. But in the typical range of flooring options, carpeting is your least expensive route.

The other advantages of carpeting include having a warmer floor, as it generally retains warm air longer and can be thicker (depending on your choice of carpet). There can be an energy efficiency factor with carpet as well. Laying or sitting on a carpeted floor is often more comfortable and gives you a warmer feel than other types of flooring. (With other flooring, laying an area rug is an option however.)

Carpeting can also help reduce noise as it tends to do a better job at stifling resonant sounds and echoes in and around it. So you may consider issues of footsteps, people talking, music, gaming, and entertainment being used.

There are a lot of varieties of carpet. So you can certainly consider more colors, patterns, designs, styles, length of cut, etc. than with the other styles of flooring. Obviously, it’s more unique than the other options.

If chosen strategically, a carpet can hide dirt more easily to the naked eye. Thus, your home may more often look cleaner and well kept.

With carpeting, you should be aware that it will wear out over time, and show wear and tear sooner than other options, on the average. The amount of foot traffic on any flooring is a significant issue of course. But the life expectancy of carpet is generally less than the life expectancy of hardwood, laminate, vinyl or tile flooring.

And certain areas of your home simply don’t go well with carpeting. Kitchens, bathrooms and other high traffic and moisture drawing areas would be better served with those other options (laminate flooring, vinyl flooring, tile flooring, hardwood flooring).
